How do you support new graduates and vet students within the industry, especially when it comes to stress and mental health issues?

Posted about 1 year ago

Thanks. We have an online facility www.vetbehaviourist.com.au which is aimed at helping new and not-so-new graduates to conduct behaviour consultations in their own clinics. Also, when I can fit it in, I have veterinarians spend time with me - we have a really good new graduate with us right now. I presume your question re 'stress and mental health issues' refers to the pets not the new graduates, albeit I remember when I was a new graduate, it was stressful for the first year! Keep misbehaving! Cam

Dr Cam! I have a question for you. What does it mean to be a veterinary behaviourist?

Posted about 1 year ago

Thanks. Veterinary Behaviourists are veterinarians who have additional post-graduate qualifications in animal behaviour management. In Australia, most become Members or Fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Surgeons. It's a fair bit of work but certainly worth it! Veterinary Behaviourists remedy behavioural maladies by looking at medical issues that may causing or contributing to the unwanted behaviours. The determine if an animal is capable or 'learning to be good' (by human's definition of 'being good), how to manage behaviour and whether some form of calmative is needed to change behaviour - such as homeopathics, pheromones, medications or even calming massage. Cheers and keep your nose wet. Cam

Dr Cam has the experience, knowledge and personality to be on tv. His interactions with pets are interesting to watch. He helped my cat Dudley, a little terror with his behaviour problems. A show with Dr Cam would be great to watch!! He's got his own brand already.

Thanks! Dudley would enjoy the show I'm sure.

Cam's a natural for Bondi Vet - wise, funny and so experienced in helping troubled pets. He helped our own dog (a highly anxious rescue) learn patterns of good behavior, and enjoy life! The day we decided to 'phone Cam for an appointment was a happy day for us all!
