My cat is distressed and I don't know why! How do I calm him down?

My usually calm indoor desexed Burmese has become very distressed the past few days. He's never hissed or howled in his whole life and now he can't stop. He'll still settle on my lap and even purr and let me rub his belly but whenever my other cat (his best pal, since he first came to us 4 years ago) he gets all tense and starts howling. My other cat doesn't even react, he actually tries to comfort the distressed one by coming up and tries to clean him but the stressed one hisses and won't let him come near. It's such a change in personality and I hope he can calm down because I'd hate to separate them! They've been best buds for years! Only ever play fighting, never anything like this
