fleas, tick treatment

My little girl had a recent bout of fleas. Should it be something I treat when it comes up or should I be give her regular medicine to prevent it? Same for heartworm, ticks and the rest?

Hi natacarol

Fleas cause skin irritation and can transmit tapeworm to children. Heartworm is a deadly parasite that resides in the heart and is spread through mosquitos. To answer your question, all dogs in Australia should receive a monthly flea and heartworm preventative (usually in the form of a spot on or oral chewable tablet). Paralysis tick is life threatening so prevention is certainly the way to go. Paralysis tick occurs mainly along the east coast of Australia, from North Queensland to Northern Victoria. Prevention comes in the form of spot on applications or oral tablets but it’s best to consult with your veterinarian to find out which products are suitable for your dog.
