Fresh, raw, kibble or canned? The right food for your dog

Feeding a dog has become more complex, with canned food, home prepared meals, packaged kibble, non-grain and even vegan varieties readily available on the market.

We suggest feeding your dog according to your vet's recommendations.

  • The product must be a balanced and complete nutritional diet

  • You need to consider your dog’s activity levels

  • Keep in mind requirements change with the age and size of your dog

  • Any known allergies your dog might have

  • The food should be tasty

  • Your own lifestyle – and how much time you need to prepare food.

Covering these bases can be achieved with most food options, but below we provide some simple digestible (see what we did?) facts in relation to the different food types.

Raw Pet Diet

A raw dog food can typically contain organ and muscle meats, whole or ground bone, raw eggs, fruits and vegetables and dairy.

Some benefits of raw food are: shinier coats, healthier skin, improved dental health, increased energy, and smaller stools. The different types of raw diets can be bought ready-packed in grocery store / pet shop, freeze-dried, or dehydrated.

Fresh Dog Food

A fresh food diet typically is made with natural, real ingredients, such as beef, chicken, lamb, peas, spinach, carrots, and blueberries. Some benefits of fresh foods are increasing energy level, shiny coat, fresh breath and even firmer stools. Fresh food can take time to prepare. Following the right guidelines for food prep is very important.

Kibble or Dry Dog Food

The ingredients in kibble are processed together and cooked. They typically have protein sources such as beef, poultry, fish and eggs, plus grains, cereals, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Some benefits are reduced dental plaque, healthier gums, reduced risk of bacteria, easier storage, less risk of spoilage and cost-effectiveness. With its scientifically formulated make-up, preparation convenience and portion control makes this a popular choice to the discerning dog owner.

Combining different food types is something we certainly recommend. The right food choice for your dog will ensure it has the best chance for a long and healthy life.
